Hello World!
First post on this blog about the scope, my interests and possible topics.
Hey everybody! I am Felix, a master’s student within the CompBio space. After years of writing all kinds of things (newspaper reports, preprint highlights, my own fantasy novel, ...), I decided that it is time to put a project into practice that I have been thinking about for quite some time: My own blog.
Blogs I got inspired by
I loved reading since my dad first started telling me fantasy stories. My fascination for blogging grew out of this fascination together with the influence of a few amazing blogs that shaped how I think about science and machine learning in general.
Among these is first and foremost Andrej Karpathy, whose deep dives into neural networks and the "craft" of AI have been transformative for how I think. I also frequently return to Jay Alammar's blog for his incredible visual explanations of complex models, and Christopher Olah's work on interpretability, which is simply world-class.
I also find The Gradient a great source for thoughtful AI long-form essays, and Distill remains the gold standard for how technical communication should look and feel.
Why another blog??
In an era of AI-generated noise, I believe there's more value than ever in human-curated exploration. My goal here is threefold:
- Clarity through Synthesis: The process of taking a complex topic—like geometric deep learning or diffusion manifolds—and breaking it down into a clear narrative is my preferred way of learning.
- Open Documentation: I'm a firm believer in 'learning in public.' By sharing my notes and thoughts early, I hope to connect with others who are thinking about the same problems.
- The Intersection: I'm particularly interested in where high-performance computing meets biology. There aren't many places documenting that journey from a student's perspective, and I'd like this to be one.
Hit me up!
This is just the beginning. I'll be focusing future posts on research, interesting papers I've read, and my path in the field. I'm always down to talk about scaling laws, protein folding, or the future of agentic workflows.
If any of this resonates with you, please reach out via Twitter, LinkedIn, or Email. I especially enjoy hearing from people working at the intersection of bits and atoms!
All the best and see you all soon!
